Mysterious Ice circles - Lake Baikal

Siberia - The strange ice circles appeared almost perfect on Lake Baikal. Scientists are trying to explain the formation of these mysterious structures, each of 4 large Km.

The first circle of ice was observed south of the lake, and a second is visible in the center. Photos taken by the astronauts were in orbit at 350 km above the Earth. They recorded the progression of circles that have appeared for the first time from 5 to 27 April.

A NASA representative said: "The circles have persisted throughout the month of April. They appeared when the ice was formed, and then disappeared when the ice melted. " Ice cover is changing rapidly at this time of year on Russian Lake and can melt and freeze again over night. Scientists believe that warming of the water surface may be the origin of these forms. It remains to understand where this hypothetical source of heat comes.

The hydrothermal activity and high heat flow have been observed in other areas of the lake but the circle was formed at the southern end on the fresh water normally.

Lake Baikal is the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world (maximum depth: 680 meters 1). It is also one of the oldest lakes in the world, dating from 25 to 30 million years. There are endemic species of fish.
