Brazil - By studying the genetic material of 19 couples, researchers have succeeded in demonstrating that people are looking for a partner whose DNA is different from theirs. They demonstrated that individuals choose a spouse who does resemble them.

In most vertebrates, the chromosome n°6 contains a region involved in the immune system, the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). The genes that are home to many variations.

Scientists have found that people whose versions with different MHC tend to unite themselves. A feature which can be explained by an unconscious desire to give life to a stronger offspring.

Indeed, a child born to parents whose genes present in the MHC are very different will have a more complete immune system. It will therefore be able to fight against many infections.
